1500 Purple Ruffles Basil Seeds Garden Herb - Non-GMO
‘Purple Ruffles’ is both a culinary and ornamental basil featuring a strong sweet-basil flavor with a hint of anise and cinnamon. This striking variety was released in 1984 by breeder Ted Torrey and later became a 1987 All-America Selections winner for both flavor and appearance. The large leaves are a glossy, deep purple with a crinkled texture and jagged fringe. ‘Purple Ruffles’ is uniquely heat tolerant and slow to bolt, with pale pink flowers that provide dramatic contrast with the dark leaves late in the season. This dual-purpose herb is a beautiful addition to kitchen gardens, flower beds, and container gardens.
Sowing: Since basil thrives in warm weather, the herb seed for sale grows best when the soil has warmed and there is no chance of frost. Gardeners with short growing seasons may want to start their Thai basil seeds indoors 3-4 weeks before the last frost date, sowing them thinly in flats and providing heat to speed germination. Transplant 15-18" apart. To direct sow, plant the seeds 1/4" deep in rich soil and full sun, thinning to 15-18" apart when the seedlings develop. Thai basil seeds also grow well indoors or as container plants.
Growing: Basil thrives in soil that drains well, yet needs water often. If the weather drops below 50 degrees, provide protection. As the plant grows, pruning it helps it to develop into a bushy, healthy plant; pruning is also important because once the plant flowers, it will begin to wilt and die. To prune the plant, remove the top several sets of leaves on each stem, taking care to leave at least three sets of leaves on the lower part.
All multiple orders of the same seed are put in the same bag. For example if you order 500 beefsteak tomato seeds x 3 then 1500 seeds will be put in the same bag. We do not send out 3 individual bags with 500 in each. This goes for all seeds unless they are listings of different seeds.
