100 Green Shiso Ao Popular Herb Perilla frutescens var crispa
Ao Shiso is a traditional Japanese herb, dento yasai, with refreshing aromatic green frilled leaves. Also known as Beefsteak plant. The plant has a bush growth habit. It is also grown as sprouts or microgreens. As the plant matures, pinch off leaves for use. This promotes branching and leaf production.
Maturity: Approx. 60-70 days
Planting season: Late spring/early summer
Aromatic leaves are used as a sushi wrap, in tempura and salad mix. Often used garnish with sashimi. Dried leaves are crushed and sprinkled over rice (furikake) or made into tea. Stalks with tiny flowers are served as an edible garnish. Fresh seeds are edible and have the same arom and flavor.. Plant the seeds 1/4" deep.
GROWING INFO BELOW
Start indoors in early spring (mid-March on the coast), or direct sow outdoors in late spring, once night time temperatures are steadily above 8°C (45°F).
Cultivation: Prepare fertile, well-drained soil. Sow by broadcasting seeds in spring/summer after last frost, in a warm, sunny location. Or sow using the info in the chart. Seeds need light to germinate so cover with a thin soil layer. Keep soil moist. Fertilize as needed. Plant is heat tolerant and prefers full sun to light shade.
If starting indoors, use equal parts sterilized seed starting mix to perlite. Mix well and add to seed trays with domes. Use bottom heat from a Seedling Heat Mat to maintain a soil temperature of 20°C (70°F). Seeds should germinate in 7 to 14 days. Be careful not to over-water, particularly once seeds have germinated, as the seedlings are prone to damping off. Remove the dome at germination, but maintain bottom heat until seedlings are large enough to pot on into larger containers.
Alternatively, direct sow outdoors into well-drained garden soil. Seeds should germinate in 14 to 20 days.
Growing
Shiso does best in full sun to partial shade, in fertile, well-drained soil. Allow transplants to become established, and then grow as you would basil — pinch growing tips regularly to produce bushier plants with more leaves. Water regularly, more so in hot weather. If growing in containers, mix equal parts potting soil and composted fine bark. Orchid bark works well.
Harvest
Pick leaves as needed throughout the summer, and harvest the flowering tops in late summer. As autumn approaches, harvest the seeds for planting next spring.
All multiple orders of the same seed are put in the same bag. For example if you order 500 beefsteak tomato seeds x 3 then 1500 seeds will be put in the same bag. We do not send out 3 individual bags with 500 in each. This goes for all seeds unless they are listings of different seeds.
